The Munich Institute of Robotics and Machine Intelligence (MIRMI) is an integrative research center at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and works on innovative and sustainable solutions for key challenges of our time, such as the future of health. Currently, TUM sets up the first integrated education and research campus for healthcare robotics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The region offers a unique research location with an excellent network of local clinics and doctors as well as social, educational and care facilities with which we will cooperate closely. The town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen hosted the Winter Olympics and is renowned worldwide for its impressive mountains and alpine sporting events. It is located around 90 km south of Munich and is easily accessible (80 min. by train / 60 min. by car/bus).

We seek two enthusiastic individuals to join our team in Garmisch-Partenkirchen to work on the topics of invasive Brain Machine Interfaces and Neurally-driven Robot Assistants.
The ideal candidate should have high motivation and willingness to work in a critical-mass international and interdisciplinary team, as well as demonstrated skills in peer-reviewed manuscript preparation.

Key responsibilities:

  • Working with brain tissue in collaboration with Neurosurgeons and Neuroanatomists
  • Developing the technology chain and processing pipeline for the Invasive Brain Machine Interfaces
  • Driving the experimental work on a regular basis
  • Publishing the outcomes of the work in peer-reviewed journals
  • Closely collaborating with the Doctoral candidates working on Brain and Neuromuscular Interfaces and Rehabilitation Robotics
  • Working for the success of research projects
  • Closely collaborating with the Senior Scientist responsible for the Research Fields Neural Interfacing and Rehabilitation Robotics
  • Participating in the writing of project proposals
  • Mentoring M.Sc. and/or B.Sc. students

Prerequisites:

  • Master or Ph.D degree in a field related to Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Brain Machine Interfaces, Computational Neuroscience

Desired qualifications:

  • Biomedical laboratory experience
  • Experimental design
  • Sensor fusion
  • Machine learning
  • Control system development
  • Biomedical signal processing (neural signal processing)
  • Electrophysiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Brain-Machine Interfaces
  • Experience in mentoring M.Sc. and B.Sc. students
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral) 

Good to have qualifications:

  • Experience with in vitro and in vivo experiments
  • German language knowledge (or willingness to learn)
  • Robotics
