The Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) in Berlin is a non-university research institute that conducts basic research in molecular pharmacology and provides a vibrant and collaborative environment with state-of-the-art facilities for research and employees from all over the world. The Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut belongs to the „Forschungsverbund Berlin e. V. (FVB)“. The FVB is an institution of seven natural sciences research institutes in Berlin funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and the association of its federal states. The research institutes are members of the Leibniz association.

In the research group Synapse Biology (headed by Dr. Noa Lipstein; FMP / NeuroCure Berlin) there is a

PhD position in Biochemistry and Electrophysiology (f/m/d)

(18/2022)

to be filled from September 1, 2022. The salary is in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service (TVöD Bund). This is a 65% doctoral position, initially limited to 3 years with the possibility of extension.

Project description:

The newly established junior group ‘Synapse Biology’ focuses on elucidating the contribution of synaptic proteins to neuronal function and plasticity, and on deciphering synaptic disease mechanisms in brain disorders. We combine genetic manipulations in mouse models with electrophysiological and cell-type-specific biochemical tools to study the molecular composition and organization of synapses, with the aim of understanding how these define synaptic function and dysfunction. The group is highly dynamic and international, and is seeking for science-enthusiastic doctoral fellow to lead one of its core projects.

The proposed project, jointly funded by the FMP and by the NeuroCure excellence initiative aims to characterize a recently identified link between synaptic transmission and neurodegenerative brain disorders (see summary here and here ). The project will include advanced electrophysiological and imaging-based super-resolution techniques in mouse and human neurons.

Requirements:

We seek highly motivated, ambitious, and talented young scientists to join an enthusiastic and collaborative team in an outstanding scientific environment. The successful applicant has a strong background in neuroscience or in cell biology. Experience in electrophysiological recordings, imaging, and/or molecular biology tools is an advantage. The project will involve working with genetically-modified mouse models. All applicants are expected to benefit from excellent written and oral communication skills and display a high personal motivation to excel in science. The working language is English.
