The IGS is embedded in the Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics "LogDynamics". It is a collaborative initiative, bringing together the working groups of five different departments of the University of Bremen in Germany. Associated partners are the BIBA (Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH), the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), the Constructor University Bremen, and several international universities.

The International Graduate School for Dynamics in Logistics (IGS) at the University of Bremen offers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate in an efficiently-structured doctoral training programme. Excellent early-stage researchers from all over the world are enabled to finish their third-cycle education at a logistic location of long-standing tradition.

The IGS is embedded in the multi-disciplinary Bremen Research Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics (LogDynamics) (http://www.logdynamics.de ).

LogDynamics is a cooperative network of research groups from five different departments of the University of Bremen: Production Engineering, Business Studies / Economics, Mathematics / Computer Science, Physics / Electrical Engineering, and Law. Associated partners are the BIBA – Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik GmbH, the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL), and the Constructor University Bremen gGmbH. The fields of research range from fundamental and applied research to transferring research results into practice. LogDynamics collaborates closely with enterprises, especially in the logistics and production industry.

The IGS aims to identify, describe, and model the intrinsic dynamics of present logistic processes and networks. By exploiting new technologies, business models and strategies, new dynamic planning and control processes will be researched and developed. The objective of the IGS is to foster excellence in education and research by providing an optimal environment. The IGS meets the challenge of globalisation through practice-oriented research within a scope of multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural cooperation.

The research revolves around four topic areas:

• Business models, decision processes and economic analyses of dynamics in logistics
• Holistic interdisciplinary methods for modelling, analysis and simulation of dynamics in logistics
• Adaptive and dynamic control methods in logistics
• Synchronisation of material, information, decision and financial flows

The IGS improves the career perspectives of early-stage researchers by offering structured doctoral training as well as by providing complementary skills and introducing researchers to industry and the international scientific community. There are numerous opportunities for doctoral candidates to participate in international conferences. Another example of an incentive is the option of actively contributing to the organisation of the biannual International Conference on Dynamics in Logistics (LDIC), a conference series set up by LogDynamics.

Course organisation

The curriculum of the International Graduate School for Dynamics in Logistics (IGS) is designed as a full-time course of research, corresponding to a German doctorate programme. It bundles interdisciplinary competences and supports the linkage between research and industry. Working on the doctoral project is the main element for research activities and occupies the major part of the curriculum. The individual research project is integrated in the disciplinary research group of the according supervisor and thus makes use of the knowledge and the infrastructure of the respective subject area and institute.

Besides the individual doctoral project, the curriculum covers collective thematic introductions, subject-specific courses, interdisciplinary colloquia, dialogue forums and excursions as well as individual coaching and training of soft and complementary skills. The latter is organised and supervised by a structural adviser in accordance to the individual needs of each doctoral candidate. Trainers of soft skills are often external experts, e.g. an opera director.

Integrated internships

Doctoral candidates can benefit from a research stay at a foreign university/institute and participate in transfer projects with industrial partners depending on the content of their research projects.

Teaching/work obligations or opportunities

Due to the integration of each scholarship holder in the working group of her/his supervisor, a doctoral candidate has the opportunity to cooperate with researchers and staff members who are usually working on research projects with external partners – either from industry or academia.

There are no teaching/working obligations for scholarship holders. The opportunity of contributing to teaching is given on an individual basis.

Academic admission requirements

The IGS addresses early-stage researchers from all over the world who hold a Master's degree equal to a German university level degree ("Master" or "Diplom", with thesis) in one of the following fields:

The applicant must have graduated with exceptionally good marks. The decisive element of the application is the preliminary research proposal, which should describe a research question, research methods and literature references. A research plan is mandatory as well. Application documents will be evaluated with regard to the applicant's qualification for doctoral studies at the University of Bremen. Additionally, the proposed topic should align with the research spectrum of LogDynamics and be related to a research topic of an active professor within the research cluster.

Language requirements

Candidates should have a very good command of English and be familiar with basic German.

Minimum requirements (English):

TOEFL: 600 points on the written TOEFL, 250 on the computer-based TOEFL and 95 on the TOEFL iBT. All of them are to be supplemented by results of the Test of Written English (academic TWE). The minimum required score is 5.0.

IELTS: Band 7.0, with a minimum of 6.0 for each (academic) module

Note: Test results may not be older than 24 months.

Candidates who obtained a degree of higher education in an English-speaking country are not required to present test results, but they do have to provide proof of their English language educational background.

Possibility of finding part-time employment

The IGS is not able to offer any scholarship to the applicants. It offers support if a student applies for a grant from a third party. The rules of additional employment depend on the third party's funding.
