Offer Description

The Sunbul research group at the Institute of Pharmacy and Molecular Biology (IPMB), Heidelberg University (Germany) invites applications for PhD and PostDoc positions, funded by ERC, in the field of Chemical Biology. The project will primarily focus on the discovery and imaging of disease-related RNA interactomes

RNAs play a myriad of roles in cellular processes and biotechnology. Their functions are precisely mediated by interactions with other biomolecules (e.g. proteins and other RNAs). Any perturbation of these interactions can lead to serious diseases. During the past decade, we made a significant contribution to the RNA imaging toolbox by generating novel genetically-encoded fluorescence light-up aptamers (e.g. Englert et al. Nature Commun 2023; Bühler et al. Nature Chem Biol 2023; Sunbul et al. Nature Biotechnol 2021; Zhang et al. Angew. Chemie 2021; Wirth et al. JACS 2019). Using this toolbox and harnessing synthetic chemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology, we now aim to decipher and visualize disease-related RNA interactomes.

Your tasks:

  • Combine the power of chemistry, biology, and physics with proteomic and metabolomic analysis;

  • Use molecular biology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and imaging techniques;

  • Accurately record, carefully analyze and present experimental data;

  • Drive your research project under the direct supervision of the principal investigator;

  • Collaborate in projects with an interdisciplinary team of doctoral students and postdocs with different backgrounds and expertise;

  • Engage in proposal writing and networking;

  • Present your research at scientific forums.

Your profile:

  • Master’s degree (for PhD position) or PhD degree (for PostDocs position) in organic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, or any related field;

  • Strong interest in RNA biotechnology, RNA biochemistry, microscopy, probes and method development;

  • Experience in classical biochemical and molecular biology methods is an asset;

  • Knowledge of biochemical and bioanalytical platforms for proteomics and next-generation sequencing is an advantage;

  • Ability to work and collaborate in an interdisciplinary team;

  • Proactive, independent, and solution-oriented way of working.

  • Fluency in English in written and spoken language;

  • Good presentation and writing skills;

 We offer:

  • A clear research topic as well as multifold training and support;

  • A stimulating international and interdisciplinary research environment;

  • Integration into a research team that is committed to delivering the highest standards of research in a fair, supportive and collaborative manner;

  • Research that contributes to advancing the frontiers of scientific knowledge;

  • Excellent research facilities at IPMB (Heidelberg University) with access to state-of-the-art tools and infrastructure;

  • The opportunity to present your data at national and international conferences and participate in workshops.

Application details:

The deadline for the application is February 15, 2024. The application package including

  • Cover letter (2 page maximum) that clearly states

    • Your research and career interests

    • Any previous research experience (final year projects, internship(s), summer placement(s), year in industry, etc.)

    • Why you want to pursue a PhD or PostDoc and why you chose the Sunbul group

  • Curriculum Vitae with contact details (phone and email) of two academic references
