JOB /OFFER DESCRIPTION

COMPO Team

The ambition of the COMPO Inria-Inserm joint project-team is to develop novel mathematical models integrating data available in clinical oncology (from clinical trials and routine care), in order to provide decision-making tools to medical oncologists, thoracic surgeons and preventive oncology staff. The main goals are: 1) to develop personalized medicine and 2) to optimize the design of scheduling regimen for combinatorial clinical trials. To achieve these, the team uniquely gathers mathematicians, pharmacologists, medical oncologists and surgeons. It is integrated in the Center of Cancer Research of Marseille (Inserm U1068, CNRS UMR7258, Aix-Marseille Université UM105, Institut Paoli-Calmettes) and located in the La Timone Health Science campus of the University Hospitals of Marseille (AP-HM), close to the INCa-labeled center for early phase clinical trials (CLIP2). This joint project-team, built on strong expertise in mathematical modeling, pharmacometrics and experimental and clinical oncology, is committed to develop novel methodologies combining mechanistic and statistical modeling to be ultimately applied at bedside.

The PhD theme and datasets

The aim of the PhD will be to develop and validate clinically usable predictive and mechanistic models of lung cancer development and recurrence in the setting of lung cancer screening, early stage diagnosis and treatment conceptualized in lung cancer interception. This project builds on already existing databases and ongoing prospective projects integrating high dimension clinical, imaging and biological longitudinal phenotyping. The  PREVALUNG, PREVALUNG ETOILE and PREVALUNG BIOCEPTION are 3 intertwined projects respectively funded by the National Institute against cancer (INCa), Aix-Marseille University Fundation for Excellence (A*midex) and the European commission (PREVAUNG EU, Horizon Europe Program). The PREVALUNG studies are recruiting 2750 participants with 3 rounds of lung cancer screening including baseline and longitudinal multimonal phenotyping.

Further validation will be possible harnessing a real life population based prospective study reporting regional data on lung cancer screening, early diagnosis and multimodal treatments, named DATALUNG PACA.

Direct mentoring

The PhD student will be mentored by a senior data scientist / mathematician (Pr D Barbolosi) and by a thoracic surgeon (Pr D Boulate, PI of PREVALUNGs and DATALUNG PACA studies).

The Main activities will be:

Review of the literature
Benchmark of existing methods
Development of novel ML algorithms
Application to the data and biological and clinical questions
ML modeling of longitudinal imaging data
Writing scientific publications

Additional activities will be:

Continuous integration / continuous deployment of the code
Data visualization
Statistical reporting to the partners
