Offer Description
The PhD position is offered under an industrial track (2 years at IMT Atlantique + 9 months at Segula Technologies, Saint Nazaire, France + 3 months at an international partner.
1.1. Domain and scientific/technical context

For several years, IMT Atlantique has been developing, in collaboration with SEGULA Technologies, a purification technology coupled with the compression of a gas mixture. The objective is the valorization of the gas obtained, for example in the separation of CH4/CO2 in biogas resulting from methanization.

The objective is now to design a compression separation process for local gas production, with investment and operating costs compatible with the targeted applications.

1.2. Scientific/technical challenges

The on-going development led to a system enabling purification through gas-liquid transfer at higher pressure than existing systems. The technology is first developed for carbon dioxide separation, with applications now extending to other compounds. In line with this research project, the proposed doctoral thesis aims to study the process intensification and applications extensions.

1.3. Considered methods, targeted results and impacts

The existing technology of gas treatment is based on gas-liquid transfer and compression. A first application case is for example the reduction of CO2 concentration in biogas from methanisation.

The objectives are now to study different gas mixtures and adapt the process to these. The work will require studying different operating conditions with experimental work being at the heart of the study. A test bench already exists and can be modified for the work.

Definition of study cases will be key, and will be linked to wider projects of IMT Atlantique and SEGULA Technologies. Conception of a flexible test bench will also be expected so that it can be later transferred to site(s) for tests in real operating conditions.

2. Partners and study periods
2.1. Supervisors and study periods

The PhD student will stay 2 years at Prof Subrenat's lab.
