Offer Description

PhD fellowship in Aix Marseille University in between two doctoral schools: "Physics and Science of Matter " and "Biology".

The PhD subject:

Venous Thrombosis (VT) is the third leading cause of cardiovascular death in industrialized countries and a major health concern. The VT pathophysiology is still poorly understood but we know that VT is a multifactorial disease in which inflammation/hypercoagulability, endothelial injury/dysfunction, and flow disorders (such as blood stagnancy) are critical components and predisposing risk factors.

This thesis aims to explore the role of blood rheology in thrombus formation around the venous valve present in deep veins. Focusing on specific aspects of blood flow around venous valves, the study aims to develop a finite element model to better understand and predict the mechanisms underlying thrombus formation.

Task description:

1. You will use a commercial finite element software Comsol to create a fluid-structure interaction model of the venous valves and the pulsatile blood flow.

2. You will validate experimentally the obtained numerical simulations

3. You will test the cellular interactions of platelets/neutrophils in flow chamber with valves.
