PhD project for scholarship within the field of Chemical Biology
One scholarship for a PhD project is available in the group of professor Knud J. Jensen at the Section for Chemical Biology and Nanobioscience, Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen.
It will be part of the Centre for Carbohydrate Recognition and Signalling (www.carb.dk).
The PhD-scholarships is scheduled to start as soon as possible, preferably October 1st 2012 or before.
The group of professor Knud J. Jensen at the Section for Chemical Biology and Nanobioscience works at the interface between synthetic chemistry, biology and biophysics, with a focus on understanding biological and chemical phenomena at the nano-scale.
The starting point for our research is most often provided by the design and chemical synthesis of molecules to address biological questions.
The scholarship will aim at elucidating the chemical communication between rhizobia and leguminous plants. The project will include isolation and characterization of lipochitin oligosaccharide signal molecules; their highly chemoselective modification to form glycoconjugates for bioimaging, glycan microarrays and Biacore studies; studying the binding interaction with nod factors receptors and other proteins.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in biology and synthetic organic chemistry. An interdisciplinary background will be appreciated.
He/she will join a team of 12 people with interdisciplinary background and is expected to acquire know-how in the various techniques used in the group required for the project.
The candidate will be involved in several national and international collaborations with academic and industrial partners and good communication skills will thus be appreciated.
