A PhD Scholarship in Marine Population Dynamics and Management is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date October 2011. The scholarship is mainly financed by the Strategic Research Council Project MAFIA.
The project will primarily be carried out in the Section for Management Systems in Charlottenlund, Denmark.
DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 90 academic employees.
PhD Project description
The aim of the project is to investigate the feeding biology, growth dynamics and bio-energetics of whiting (Merlangius merlangus) in the Western Baltic Sea, and to compare these population dynamic parameters with those of its conspecific in the North Sea. The impact of influencing factors on the above parameters, such as seasonal and geographical variation in e.g. hydrographical conditions (temperature, salinity, oxygen), as well as sex, maturity, age and condition specific variability will be evaluated in the comparative study between Baltic and North Sea whiting.
Whiting stomach analyses and otolith based growth analyses from a large number of Western Baltic Sea individuals comprise together with basic information on individual weight, sex and maturity the core data within this PhD project. Liver and gonads will also be retrieved for estimation of spawning season, fecundity and energy density per egg to obtain an estimate of the gonadal growth in relation to energy availability. The energetic studies that encompass energy consumption for different whiting predator length groups will be based on sampled stomachs as well as growth analyses of whiting predators The field work will additionally comprise collection of herring, sprat, and other selected vertebrate and invertebrate prey by size to attain estimates of prey morphometry and energy density to be used in a bio-energetic model. A similar model already exists for North Sea whiting allowing a comparative study.
We are looking for a candidate who has:
- Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, or equivalent
- Previous experience in marine, aquatic, ecological and/or population dynamics research
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
- Demonstrated quantitative analytical skills
- Keen interest in research and for working within the field of marine and aquatic sciences
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students at DTU. The period of employment is 3 years.
