Job Description

Are you a curious, self-driven individual with a strong passion for developing sustainable energy solutions? The Department of Wind and Energy Systems at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a PhD position focused on the topic of flow modelling  in and around wind farms consisting of bottom fixed or floating turbines. This is your opportunity to make a significant contribution towards improving wind farm efficiency and sustainability.

Responsibilities and qualifications

We need a passionate, curious, and enthusiastic new team member committed to addressing climate change through advancing renewable energy systems. We're searching for someone who flourishes in the face of complex problems, isn't afraid to ask probing questions, and possesses the grit to pursue innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving field.

You are a committed individual with a strong engineering background. You possess a profound passion for modeling the intricate dynamics within wind farm environments. Fueled by your insatiable curiosity, you embark on a journey to unravel the complexities of turbulent interactions between the atmosphere and the flow of turbines in and around wind farms. Your innate drive for self-guided exploration propels you to continually push boundaries, aspiring to redefine the limits of what is achievable today, all in pursuit of a more promising and sustainable tomorrow.

You will get the chance to work in one of Europe’s best Technical Universities in the field of wind energy and as a PhD candidate, you will be tasked with applying and developing an efficient and fast flow model for simulating the complex turbulent interactions between atmosphere and wind farms. Specifically, you will work with the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) on Large Eddy Simulations (LES) and  will closely collaborate with  groups at Uppsala University and TU Braunschweig, that are experts in the field of LBM. Furthermore, you will get the opportunity to work with the inhouse developed DYNAMIKS framework for aeroelastic simulations of floating wind turbines

Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • A Master's degree in an engineering field or computer science
  • Proficiency in programming and ideally experience with GPUs

Desirable additional background knowledge

  • Wind energy
  • Flow and turbulence modelling
  • Aeroelastic simulations of wind turbines
  • Experience with LBM

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
