The Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position in the project “Two-photon Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy through Fibres (T-SPIF)”. The subject of the project is at the cutting edge of science and will involve collaboration with international experts and industry. We expect this work to result in publications in high ranking journals.
Description of PhD project
For many human diseases, early diagnosis is crucial for a positive therapy outcome, but would require techniques for fast microscopic imaging of tissues inside the body at a resolution level of individual cells. One promising idea on how to accomplish this is to combine three existing techniques: (1) Two-photon microscopy provides a high imaging resolution at large depths, allowing individual cells to be imaged, (2) Selective Plane Illumination allows fast 3D image formation because an entire plane of tissue can be imaged at a time, and (3) delivering the light through fibres enables integration into endoscopes, which in turn enables access to many hollow organs inside the human body.
Such a combination of techniques could be ground-breaking in point-of-care diagnostics. This ambitious PhD project, “Two-photon Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy through Fibres (T-SPIF)”, funded by Det Frie Forskningsråd | Teknologi og Produktion (DFF FTP), aims to accomplish this challenging combination of techniques.
In this project, you will explore, theoretically and experimentally, methods of shaping both spatial and temporal beam and phase profiles of ultrafast pulses of laser light using a spatial light modulator (SLM), to generate a light sheet at the distal end of either a multimode or multicore fibre. The theoretical modelling will include the effects of fibre propagation, including dispersion, phase shift and the influence of fibre bending. The project aims at imaging tissue samples using the developed system towards the end of the project.
During the project, you will collaborate with the fibre manufacturer OFS, and the project includes an extended research stay at University of St. Andrews in Scotland in the group of Prof. Kishan Dholakia, one of the world leaders in laser beam shaping and selective plane illumination microscopy.
The candidate should have a master's degree in photonics, physics, telecommunication or similar. Solid experimental and theoretical skills in optics, lasers and photonics are expected. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must. Preferred starting month is October or November 2017.
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
The primary workplace is DTU Fotonik, DTU Risø Campus, Roskilde, Denmark. At some point during the project, the PhD will stay externally at University of St. Andrews in Scotland for up to 6 months.
