The Department of Wind and Energy Systems at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a PhD position focused on the topic of Wind Farm Control Co-Design at DTU Wind. This is your opportunity to make a significant contribution towards improving wind farm efficiency and sustainability.

We need a passionate, curious, and enthusiastic new team member committed to addressing climate change through advancing renewable energy systems. We're searching for someone who flourishes in the face of complex problems, isn't afraid to ask probing questions, and possesses the grit to pursue innovative solutions in a rapidly evolving field.

You are a committed individual with a strong engineering background. You have a keen interest in optimization, control, and wind farm design. Your curiosity guides you to explore and understand the intricacies of wind energy systems, and your self-guided nature encourages you to push the limits of what is today possible for a better tomorrow.

You have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree and some international experience.

As a PhD candidate, you will be tasked with the development of modelling capabilities and their application in wind farm control co-design – which includes control variables and considers operation of the wind farm in the design process. You will work on development of economic and engineering models of holistic optimization of wind farms for the best financial performance while considering environmental aspects as well.

This project is co-financed by the EU-H2020 SUDOCO project, which focuses on developing new methods for the control co-design of offshore wind farms. In line with the goals of the SUDOCO project, this PhD will execute control co-design studies that ae core to the overall project objectives. You will work with a team of PhDs and researchers who are working on models that will be integrated into the co-design optimization studies.

You will get the chance to work in one of the best Technical University Europe, at the Risø campus, the cradle and world renown campus of innovation and research in wind energy.  Furthermore, by being part of an EU project you will have the opportunity to meet regularly and work closely with a distributed team of experts, both from academia and wind industry located all across Europe.

Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • A Master's degree in an engineering field or computer science
  • Proficiency in scientific Python programming
  • A background in optimization

Wind and Energy System Department is a mission-oriented organisation focused on accelerating the development and integration of wind based energy systems. The System Engineering and Optimization (SYS) section work closely with experts from all across the department and companies to create simulation, design and control solutions for wind farm, wind clusters and hybrid-power plants.

Approval and Enrolment 
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study program, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education . 

Salary and appointment terms 
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
