One PhD scholarship on NATO to be placed jointly at University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS)
Job description:
One PhD scholarship is available to be placed jointly at the Department of Political Science and Public Management at the University of Southern Denmark and at DIIS in the research unit on Defence and Security. The scholarship will focus on NATOs ability to adapt to the strategic environment of the 21st century.
The scholarship is available for appointment for a period of three years beginning no later than March 1st, 2011. The PhD scholarship must be completed over a three-year period and the workplace will be divided between Odense (SDU) and Copenhagen (DIIS). The allocation of a PhD scholarship presupposes enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.
The project will focus on NATOs ability to adapt internally and externally to the new strategic environment. The point of departure are the NATO summits in Bucharest, Strasbourg/Kehl, and Lisbon which laid the foundations for defining NATOs role and relationships in the 21st century.
Applicants must address the following theme in their project description:
Leadership and Strategic Rationale in the Atlantic Alliance
The project must focus on NATOs internal efforts to define its strategic rationale as well as the balance between leadership and collective effort. A leader can define visions or shape them in operations in which it takes the lead, but visions must ultimately take root among all allies to be effective. The project must address this challenge, which can be done with a focus on the Strategic Concept, NATO operations, or some other issue. We invite creative thinking in this respect.
The application should include a detailed description of the PhD project. The overarching research question is defined by the project description, but the application should nonetheless define the research question in greater detail. The application should then link the research question to a choice of relevant theory, research design and methods, and include a work schedule. The project description must not exceed 5 pages.
Successful applicants must participate in a DIIS-SDU research programme that over the three-year period will train the candidate and embed the project in a NATO studies framework. The research programme will involve PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops, as well as participation in DIIS policy-relevant applied research and teaching at SDU. Moreover, the candidate will do doctoral work partly at DIIS, partly at SDU, and the candidate is expected to participate in the general research activities of DIIS and SDU, respectively, when working there.
Applications are invited from candidates with a Masters Degree. Only candidates with top academic qualifications will be considered for enrolment.
