We are looking for a Research Officer, Aerial Robotics to support our Aerospace Research Centre. The Research Officer (RO) would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.  

 

The Research Officer provides leadership, and technical support, and systems oversight in the day-to-day operations of the aerial robotics team.  

 

Working with other members of the team, the Research Officer will:

 

  • Develop solutions for aerial robotics systems including vision, perching system, UAV  swarming, manipulation and sensor deployment;
  • Author, review, and critique research plans, technical reports and papers;
  • Assist in the development of research proposals including collaboration with external partners;
  • Present research findings in technical forums including conferences, seminars, working groups, etc. This may include authoring conference & journal papers;
  • When necessary, travel to client site to provide deployment support of technologies and conduct interface and/or integration testing.

Education

PhD in Natural Science or Engineering. A Master’s degree in an engineering field may also be accepted.

Experience
  • Experience in development and integration of mechatronic systems, with an emphasis on Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems;
  • Experience in dynamics and control of RPAS, including experience in technology development using Pixhawk controllers;
  • Experience with programming and scripting languages including Matlab, C/C++ and Python;
  • Experience in identification of research requirements, proposal writing, project management, data production and analysis, ensuring data quality and reporting through written documentation, presentations and publishing peer-reviewed research papers; and
  • Some experience in the development of partnerships and collaborations.

 
Experience in the following are assets: 
 

  • Experience in computer vision and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM);
  • Hands on experience in 3D printing of mechanical parts and systems;
  • Experience in the following software environments :
    • ROS/ROS2;
    • AirSim;
    • MATLAB/Simulink.

Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:


Technical Competencies
  • Knowledge of mechatronics systems and dynamics and control of RPAS;
  • Knowledge of UAV simulation software packages;
  • Knowledge of SLAM algorithms and Swarm robotics; and 
  • Knowledge of conventional AI machine/deep learning models, e.g., VGG, YOLO series is an asset.

Compensation

This position is classified as a Research Officer (RO), a group that is unique to the NRC. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $62,071 to $175,466 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions.

 

NOTE: Please note that the full RO/RCO salary scale has five levels. Salary determination will be based on a review of the candidate’s expertise, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience relative to the requirements of the level.  As such, the initial salary could be within another level of the RO/RCO salary scale (i.e. above or below the intended level for this position).

 

In addition, the incumbent will receive the Bilingualism Bonus of $800 per year.
