What is the purpose of the supplement?
The purpose of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society Scholarship supplement is to foster graduate research in atmospheric and oceanographic sciences in Canada. The first supplement was initiated by Weather Research House Inc. and the second by the Canadian National Committee for the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (CNC-SCOR). Both are sponsored by the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (CMOS).
Are you eligible to hold a supplement?
At the time you apply for a scholarship supplement, you must be studying or planning to study atmospheric or oceanic sciences in a recognized postgraduate program. All branches of atmospheric sciences, including hydrology, are acceptable. In the oceanic and limnological sciences, biological research is not accepted, unless it is as an indicator of physical/dynamical/chemical processes.
What kind of support does this supplement provide?
This supplement provides support to a high-calibre student who is working towards a master's or doctoral degree in atmospheric or oceanic sciences. CMOS grants two new awards each year.
Value of supplement
If you are the successful applicant, CMOS will supplement your NSERC scholarship by $5,000 for up to two years. However, to receive the supplement in the second year, you must continue to hold an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship or a Canada Graduate Scholarship.
How do you apply?
To be considered for this supplement, you must submit the following to CMOS (see address below) by April 30 of the year in which you are awarded your PGS:
- A copy of your Notification of Award from NSERC
- A copy of your successful scholarship application
- A two-page (12-point font) résumé describing your career goals and academic and extracurricular activities that support your interests in meteorological or oceanographic research
- A statement of endorsement from your research supervisor describing why you are particularly suitable for meteorological or oceanographic research
Only complete applications will be reviewed.
Review procedures
A special committee at CMOS will review the applications and recommend the eligible applicant it considers to have the best qualifications overall.
Notification of decision
CMOS will choose the successful applicant and announce the results at its annual congress in May or June. CMOS will contact successful applicants before the congress and inform them of the results.
Payment
CMOS is responsible for releasing the award supplement. It will also ensure that the recipient of the supplement continues to hold an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship or a Canada Graduate Scholarship and continues to be enrolled full-time.
