Context
----------
UCL (Université catholique de Louvain) and IBA (Ion Beam Applications) have launched together a
research project that aims at developing innovative imaging devices for proton therapy. The project
is funded by the Region Wallonne of Belgium until August 2013. The involved academic institutes are
ICTEAM (Information and Communication Technologies, Electronics, and Applied Mathematics) and IREC
(Institut de Recherche Expérimentale et Clinique). IBA is the worldwide leader in Proton Therapy facility
development.
Proton therapy is an emerging treatment modality for specific types of cancers. Compared to usual
photon-based radiotherapy, it allows for a more accurate radiation dose delivery and can thus
potentially improve treatment efficacy while reducing its toxicity. This capability cannot be fully
exploited without efficient embedded imaging and beam properties measurement devices. Their
purpose is to position the patient according to the planned treatment and assure the precision of proton
beam range to irradiate the tumor even when it is mobile due to e.g. respiratory movements. The
project concerns real-time in-vivo tracking of proton beam range analyzing prompt-gamma emission
caused by protons interacting with tissue.
Mission
----------
As a physicist specialized in radiation detectors you will contribute to the development of gamma camera capable of measuring prompt gamma emission during treatment. You will characterize different gamma-detection techniques to be applied, study existing gamma detectors (e.g. PET-detectors), design and adapt detector electronics for silicon or conventional photomultipliers readout, perform tests and validation of prototype units in collaboration with industrial partners.
Profile
--------
-You have a PhD degree in applied physics, particle physics, engineering or related field
-Practical knowledge of radiation detectors
-Experience in analog and digital electronics design, embedded systems hardware and software
-Good knowledge of spoken and written English
