Ghent University is coordinating the FP7 project: “Increasing the penetration of renewable energy sources in the distribution grid by developing control strategies and using ancillary services” (INCREASE). Thirteen partners from all over Europe will be working together to find a solution to increase the penetration of renewable energy sources in the distribution network. This solution can be found in the control strategies of the grid-connected inverters of distributed generation units. At the Electrical Energy Laboratory (EELAB) of Ghent University, research has been conducted for several years on control strategies for grid-connected inverters. This research has resulted in two PhD’s: “Control of 3-phase inverter-connected distributed generators regarding the improvement of the power quality” and “Voltage-based droop control of converter-interfaced distributed generation units in microgrids” and several publications. These PhD’s resulted in control strategies for grid-connected inverters and for inverters in microgrids.
The purpose of the proposed PhD, is to continue the research and to combine the aforementioned control strategies. Special attention could be devoted to decreasing voltage unbalance, improving fault ride-through capabilities and reducing network losses.
The PhD position runs over 4 years (starting on 1 Sept. 2013) and is embedded in the Electrical Energy Laboratory, a research group of the Department of Electrical Energy, Systems and Automation of Ghent University (http://www.ugent.be/ea/eesa). The research will be supervised by dr. Tine Vandoorn, dr. Bart Meersman and prof. Lieven Vandevelde.
The candidate should have a strong interest in and preferably have some elementary knowledge of power quality and grid-connected inverters. Furthermore, the candidate must have knowledge of electrical grids in general. As the research also involves the practical implementation of control strategies in grid-connected inverters, the candidate should also be strongly and affinity in experimental research.
