For KU Leuven, LESEC (Leuven Engineering and Science Education Center), we are looking for engineers with a keen interest in educational research and labor market competences for engineers.

The PREFER project (Professional Roles and Employability of Future Engineers) is an European project that aims to strengthen competences of Engineering Technology students for the future labor market in different stages of their educational career. Supervised by KU Leuven, The PREFER consortium consists of 13 partners from three European countries (Belgium, The Netherlands, & Ireland) and involves a wide variety of stakeholders:
- Universities: KU Leuven [B], TU Delft [NL],and Dublin Institute of Technology [IRL]
- Engineering Federations: IE-net [B], KIVI[NL], and Engineers Ireland [IRL]
- Technology Federation of Flanders: Agoria [B]
- Industry: Engie-Electrabel [B], SiemensNederland [NL], Electricity Supply Board [IRL]
- European Engineering Federations: SEFI &FEANI
- Professional Test Developer: BDO [B]
The PREFER project builds further on the realizations of the Rolling project (www.iiw.kuleuven.be/rolling).The prime objective of the PREFER project is to increase awarenessamong Engineering Technology students about their professional skills and totrain these skills within an existing professional roles framework. In order to ensure a betterfit between different types of engineers and the needs of the labor market, we will first optimize the current theoretical framework (i.e.,professional roles model) in cooperation with all stakeholders. This will be done by linking role specific competences and skills to the wide variety of engineering positions in the labor market. In cooperation with a professionaltest developer (BDO), a number of tools will subsequently be developed in orderto familiarize Engineering Technology students with the professional rolesframework and to let them explore their own strengths and weaknesses as anengineer.
ThisPhD project primarily focuses on the development of the theoreticalprofessional roles model that serves as the overarching framework to classifyengineering positions. In close collaboration with industry, you are responsible for a comprehensive overview of the different engineering functions with their matching competences and skills in different industrial sectors.This overview will serve as the main source of input for the development of specific tools that will be used by Engineering Technology students in order to(1) identify their own interests and (2) to explore their own strengths and weaknesses. You will be also responsible for the validation of the developed tools.
