Offer Description

We are seeking a passionate and innovative PhD researcher to join our multidisciplinary team at KU Leuven, working on a state-of-the-art project in the field of pharmaceutical technology. This exciting role involves the development of controlled-release dosage forms using advanced 3D printing techniques. The ideal candidate will have expertise in either pharmaceutical sciences, chemical engineering, or related fields, with a keen interest in drug formulation, 3D printing technology, and its application in drug delivery systems. You will play a critical role in a project that aims to significantly improve drug efficacy and patient adherence by optimizing drug release profiles. Your work will contribute to a pioneering effort in creating new dosage forms by addressing the underlying scientific challenges, while keeping an eye open for valorization opportunities (e.g., spin-off creation). If you are eager to contribute to a project with real-world impact, offering both intellectual challenge and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in healthcare, we encourage you to apply.

In this project, you will be working together with scientists and engineers with complementary expertise in materials science, 3D printing, simulations, drug formulation, and physical chemistry. For more information on the research group coordinating this project, please refer to http://amelootgroup.org/   and https://twitter.com/AmelootGroup .

Additional Information
Benefits
  • A full-time PhD position for 4 years. The initial contract will be for 1 year and will be extended after a positive evaluation.
  • Excellent guidance by our dynamic, international, and multidisciplinary team.
  • High level scientific training at a top-ranked university.
  • Being part of world-class research groups with access to top-class labs
  • A remuneration package competitive with standards in Belgium, a country with a high quality of life and excellent health care system.
  • Ample occasions to develop yourself in a scientific and/or an industrial direction. Besides opportunities offered by the research group, further doctoral training for PhD candidates is provided in the framework of the KU Leuven Arenberg Doctoral School (https://set.kuleuven.be/phd ), known for its strong focus on both future scientists and scientifically trained professionals who will valorise their doctoral expertise and competences in a non-academic context.
  • A stay in a vibrant environment in the hearth of Europe. The university is located in Leuven, a town of approximately 100.000 inhabitants, located close to Brussels (25 km), and 20 minutes by train from Brussels International Airport. This strategic positioning and the strong presence of the university, international research centers, and industry, lead to a safe town with high quality of life, welcome to non-Dutch speaking people and with ample opportunities for social and sport activities. The mixture of cultures and research fields are some of the ingredients making the university of Leuven the most innovative university in Europe (https://nieuws.kuleuven.be/en/content/2018/ku-leuven-once-again-tops-re… ). Eligibility criteria

We are looking for:

  • A motivated candidate with a strong academic track record (above average in comparison with your peers) and an MSc degree in materials chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, physical chemistry, biomedical engineering, biomaterials engineering, or a related field in Science and Engineering.
  • A candidate passionate about novel materials and technology, innovations in pharma, and willing to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Previous demonstrations of out-of-the-box thinking. Bonus points if you consider yourself a 'maker' and practical problem solver, tell us what you are doing!
  • Since we target real-world applications through our research, an interest in valorization (e.g., spin-off creation) is a plus.
  • Since we are a highly international team, proficiency in both written and spoken English is non-negotiable.

Please consider applying if you have several of the following skills:

  • Required: Expertise in materials chemistry / physical chemistry / pharmaceutical technology and willingness to learn about the other domains in the project that are not your background
  • Experience with drug formulation or 3D printing is a plus
  • Some programming experience or experience with CAD software is a plus
  • Other skills that you think are relevant (please explain in your cover letter)

Applications with generic cover letters that do not illustrate a link to the project will be ignored.
