The Institute for Medieval Research (IMAFO ) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW ), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is offering a

 

PhD Student Position (f/m/x)

(part-time, 30 hours per week)

 

in the FWF Weave Joint Project “Histories in Transition. The Case of Freising and Salzburg (9th -12th c.) ” for a duration of 36 months (April 1st , 2024 until March 31st , 2027).

 

The project analyses historiographical texts from the Salzburg scriptorium from ca. 800 to ca. 1200 in their manuscript context. The Austrian project team is collaborating closely with a German research team working on the codices of the Freising scriptorium. The overall aim of the project is to find out how the way history was thought, organised, compiled and written changed in the course of the formation and transformation of the Carolingian world.

 

Your tasks:

·         Detailed codicological and palaeographical analysis of the (post)Carolingian manuscripts of Salzburg

·         Preparation of the processed palaeographical and codicological datas for a database and for an online publication

·         Independent research, lectures and publications on text, textual design and content of the processed manuscripts

·         Assistance in the organisation of conferences and workshops within the framework of the project

 

Your profile:

·         Master's degree with specialisation in medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences

·         Knowledge of the historiography of the Middle Ages and its manuscript tradition

·         Expertise in central techniques of historical research and ancillary sciences of history (esp. palaeography, codicology)

·         Experience with databases and basic knowledge in the processing of XML TEI documents (e.g. Oxygen XML editor) and text analyses (e.g. AntConc)

·         Excellent command of medieval Latin and English

·         Good communication skills and the ability to work well within an international research team

 

 

We offer an exciting job and integration into an interdisciplinary project team.The annual gross salary according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) for this position is € 37.773,33.
