Offer Description
Revealing secrets about innate immune mechanisms at bat versus human mucosal sites upon viral infections and about the ability of bats to tolerate viruses deadly to humans or other mammals will possibly shed light on novel therapeutic targets and prevention measures. Developing and applying new tools from different angles to the question of how bats can live with such highly pathogenic viruses could one day lead to insights how to tackle severe infections in humans and how to avoid spillovers from bat to man. Thus, establishing a comparative infectiology in standardized and optimized bat and human lung organoids will enable to characterize intrinsic mechanisms similar or deviating in BAT (and) MAN. This project will lay a special focus on innate immune mechanisms, in particular the complement system
