The Ries lab is developing super-resolution microscopy methods for structural cell biology and is looking for a PhD student to join the team.

About the Max Perutz Labs: The successful applicant will work in a stimulating scientific environment, the Department for Structural and Computational Biology at the Max Perutz Labs, a research institute established by the University of Vienna and the Medical University of Vienna to provide an environment for excellent, internationally recognized research and education in the field of Molecular Biology. Dedicated to a mechanistic understanding of fundamental biomedical processes, scientists at the Max Perutz Labs aim to link breakthroughs in basic research to advances in human health. The Max Perutz Labs are located at the Vienna BioCenter, one of Europe’s hotspots for Life Sciences, and host 44 research groups, involving around 400 scientists and staff from more than 40 nations.   

The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension. With appropriate work progress, an extension to a total maximum of 4 years is possible.


Your future tasks:


You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • Your main task is to complete and to submit your dissertation.
  • You meet and consult with your supervisor(s) on a regular basis in order to priorities your tasks and get the necessary support to complete your dissertation successfully in time.
  • You participate in your department's and the Doctoral School activities and workshops.
  • You participate in conferences and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • You actively seek support (workshops, training, coaching etc.) if necessary.

This is part of your personality:


Background in Biology:

  • Extensive experience with superresolution microscopy and specifically MINFLUX
  • Expertise in fluorophores and fluorescent proteins.     

General Expectations: 

  • Above-average MA or equivalent in a field of study relevant for the respective position.
  • Excellent academic and study record (e.g. FÖP within one year, annual submission of progress reports; outstanding publication record etc.).
  • High level of motivation and commitment to succesfully complete your doctoral studies within the anticipated time frame.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level),
  • Collaborative, team-minded and pro-active attitude.
  • High level of written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with the structures of the University of Vienna.
  • Completed Master's degree or Diploma
