Thomas William Hughes Research Supplementary Scholarship in Medical Studies

In 2021, Barbara Hughes and Donna Hughes-Barton donated $115,000 to the University of Adelaide (the University) for the purpose of establishing a scholarship for Doctor of Philosophy students undertaking research in Medical Studies.

The award was established in honour of Thomas William (Bill) Hughes (BA 95, BA(Hons) 97).

Eligibility:

To be eligible to hold the award, candidates must be:

  • An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, New Zealand Citizen, Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder or international student;
  • Enrolled in the third year of a Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences within the Adelaide Medical School or in the School of Biomedical Sciences;
  • Undertaking research in medical studies*;
  • The recipient of a major scholarship.

*For the purpose of this award, medical studies is defined as 'the study of the principles and procedures used in preventing, diagnosing, caring for and treating illness, disease and injury in humans, and the maintenance of general health’ and excludes the health sciences disciplines of nursing, pharmacy, dental studies, optical science, public health, radiography, rehabilitation therapies, allied health and psychology.

Value and Benefits:

The scholarship is a once-off stipend payment of $5,500, payable in one instalment to the student.
