It is well known that soil-borne pathogens are influenced by crop rotations. However, little is known about the relation between plant root health and pathogen population dynamics at the community level. Recent technologies such as pyrosequencing have enabled a hitherto unseen detail in studies of the composition of pathogen communities in environmental samples. This study will use pyrosequencing to characterize populations of pathogens from soils with suspected problems of disease and from soils with no history of disease, comparing these data with disease development in the following crop. The study will include onion, carrot and strawberry diseases. The study is expected to lead to a better understanding of the population dynamics of soil microbial communities in relation to development of root diseases.

This scholarship is offered once only to an unspecified number of people. Open for applications from June 1, 2012 until December 1, 2012.

The value of this scholarship is DKK20000 (maximum per month). This award is to be used for accommodation and living expenses. This scholarship is paid monthly for the period of 3 years.

This scholarship is for one of the following fields of research: Crop and pasture production, Ecology and evolution, Environmental sciences or Microbiology. It is required that your study starts no earlier than December 1, 2012 and no later than June 1, 2013.

You must be between the age of 25 and 35. There are no restrictions on citizenship.
