Australia’s leading Climate Change and Human Health research group seeks a highly motivated health researcher to join our vibrant team based at NCEPH, led by Prof Tony McMichael, and host of Australia’s Climate Change Adaptation Research Network for Human Health. Our project will measure the effects of heat exposure on the health of workers and their capacity to keep working, identify protective OHS adaptation strategies, and project future health burden using IPCC scenarios. You will work with national and international health experts on this large multidisciplinary NHMRC project. The position will involve conducting a literature review, some travel to regional worksites, monitoring climate data recorders, providing health education, interviewing, mixed method data analysis, and contributing to scientific papers. PURPOSE STATEMENT: The position supports the Chief Investigator to fulfil the aims of an NHMRC funded project grant. The project is designed to boost Australia’s capacity to adapt to climate change and to build capacity in this research arena. KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS: Position Dimension & Relationships: The position is established within the NCEPH research theme “Environment, Climate, and Health” and reports to the Chief Investigator. The position collaborates with project academic staff, support staff, Higher Degree Research students and with participating research partners at worksite locations. Role Statement: Under the broad direction of the Chief Investigator the Research Officer is required to: 1. Assist in the design of the research tool and in the conduct of interviews. 2. Assist in the training of workers to self-assess their hydration and health status and to establish and provide a help-line telephone support service. 3. Assist in building and maintaining relationships with research workplace partners. 4. Collect health and climate data. 5. Summarise and analyse the research results. 6. Assist in the preparation of scientific reports for conference presentations and for publication in peer-reviewed journals. 7. Substantially contribute to the coordination and management of the project. 8. Take reasonable care for their own workplace health and safety and not wilfully place at risk the health or safety of any other person in the workplace. 9. Other duties consistent with the classification of the position.
1. Undergraduate or higher degree in health sciences. 2. Proven ability to build and maintain effective relationships and act with diplomacy and discretion when dealing with sensitive and confidential issues. 3. Experience in research methodology and in the use of relevant statistical packages. 4. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to consult, negotiate and liaise effectively with a diverse range of people in written and verbal communication. 5. Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to prioritise workflow, exercise judgment and meet deadlines while working independently or as a member of a team. 6. Demonstrated ability to pursue research with some degree of independence 7. A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to their application in a university context. ANU officer grade 5 and 6 are broadbanded in this stream. It is expected that at the higher levels within the broadband, occupants will have a deeper understanding, and a more independent application, of the research theory and techniques.
