Musculoskeletal health – an integrated approach

A prestigious Arthritis Victoria-funded PhD scholarship is now available for a suitable candidate to undertake exciting and innovative fulltime doctoral research at Deakin University (Burwood campus).

The research project will be in the broad area of Public Health and will focus on the development and application of novel interventions to improve the well being of Victorians who are affected by musculoskeletal problems (arthritis, back pain, osteoporosis and other related problems). The candidature will be located at the Burwood Campus in a vibrant and innovative research culture led by Richard Osborne, Professor of Public Health, Director of Public Health Innovation, Population Health Strategic Research Centre.

There is opportunity for this research to focus on musculoskeletal health in settings including workplaces, and involving innovative web-based education and self-management interventions. The research team supporting this doctoral project has strong local and international research strengths in health services research, epidemiology, health program evaluation, chronic disease self-management, health literacy and implementation science. The research will have strong linkages to practice and policy and will suit candidates from several disciplines across disease management and heath promotion.

The Public Health Innovation team at Deakin University is interdisciplinary, focused on excellence in research, excellence in implementation, and committed to making positive contributions in the community, across healthcare and within policy. Using co-creation and partnership approaches the team has generated a wide variety of innovations and tools used both nationally and internationally.

The annual PhD stipend is $25,000 (tax exempt) plus allowances and is available from 2011 for three years fulltime study based in Victoria.

Eligibility requirements; the prospective candidate must have completed a four year undergraduate degree (Bachelor (Hons)) and/or a Masters with a research component in the health sciences or equivalent. A strong interest and/or experience in public health would be an advantage.
