Investigating the effectiveness of teacher education for early career teachers in diverse settings: A longitudinal study

Deakin University, School of Education, is currently inviting outstanding candidates to apply for a PhD scholarship to be undertaken as part of an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage project.

The longitudinal project investigates the effectiveness of teacher education for early career teachers in diverse settings in Queensland and Victoria. The findings will inform state and national policy, as well as the work of professional regulation authorities and teacher education providers.

The project team is seeking a candidate with research interest in an area of strategic importance to the project. Candidates are encouraged to prepare an innovative proposal addressing a dimension of one of the following research questions:

  • How well equipped are teacher education graduates to meet the requirements of the diverse settings in which they are employed?
  • What characteristics of teacher education programs are most effective in preparing teachers to work in a variety of school settings?
  • How does the teacher education course attended impact on graduate employment destination, pathways and retention within the profession?

Terms & Conditions

Selection for scholarships is based on academic merit, research experience, publications relative to opportunity, alignment of the project with strategic priorities of the ARC Linkage project. 

The successful candidate will be entitled to:

  • a stipend of $27,651 per annum (2011 rate)
  • a relocation allowance up to $1,485 (2011 rate) awarded to students who are moving from interstate or overseas in order to study at Deakin
  • Thesis allowance of up to $420 for costs associated with the production of a Doctoral thesis
  • Paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.

Eligibility

Successful applicants must have achieved a first class Honours degree or equivalent.  The award is open to domestic and international students. Awards are only available to those who will be commencing a Doctoral degree in 2011.
