PhD Scholarship in Remote Sensing, GIS, Terrain Mapping and Predictive Modelling of Archaeological sites in the North Kimberley
University of New England
PhD position in GIS at the University of New England in Armidale NSW to Map / GIS the Rock Art and Archaeology of the Kimberley region in WA researching any connection between habitation / art sites and associated geology/ vegetation / climate etc.
We seek a dynamic doctoral candidate to pursue innovative research in this area. Using new and existing datasets, this cross-disciplinary project will evaluate to what degree we can improve our current understanding of the distribution of rock art and settlements in the Kimberley by utilising new spatial modelling tools and historical distribution records.
Previous researchers have undertaken faunal, floral, archaeological and ethnographic surveys in the Kimberley, however these have not been undertaken within the context of mapped terrain units. This project will incorporate these surveys and planned future work in mapped terrain units and will explore spatial connections between records and environmental factors such as geology, food resources, vegetation, river networks, accessibility, etc.
Using historical records and various environmental variables and their correlations, we expect to develop predictive models and probability distributions of likely unrecorded and undiscovered sites. The project can be tailored to suit the skills of the particular applicant.
This project will involve training in a range of different areas including GIS, Remote Sensing, modelling, and modern statistical tools, working in a cross-disciplinary team of archaeologists, remote sensors and spatial information specialists.
The project has ARC funds to support stipend, fieldwork and analytical costs. The PhD scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of $29,320 per annum for three years. A background in Environmental Science and Archaeology is preferred.
Experience with GIS and Remote Sensing software would be advantageous. Good presentation, writing skills, and a demonstrated motivation for research would be beneficial.
The work will be undertaken as part of a multidisciplinary team with prior research experience in the region, as well as indigenous communities and other stakeholders.
The candidate is expected to begin work by 30th June 2011.
For further information, please contact Dr Lalit Kumar on 02 6773 5239 or firstname.lastname@example.org Interested candidates should send a CV, copies of undergraduate transcripts, and names and addresses (including email) of 3 referees to Dr Kumar by 15 May 2011.
