Olwen Tudor Jones Scholarship

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2001 to assist students carrying out archaeological fieldwork in the Mediterranean. 

b. This Scholarship has been donated by the family of Olwen Tudor Jones (1916-2001), a Research Assistant in Archaeology at the University of Sydney from 1979 to 1993.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled in full-time/part-time in an undergraduate degree majoring in Archaeology within the School of Humanities at the University of Sydney. 

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,

II. evidence of acceptance onto an archaeological project in the Mediterranean, and

III. a personal statement outlining what the applicant expects participation in the fieldwork project will contribute to their studies and future plans, and demonstration of any financial hardship. 

b. Preference will be given to applicants who:

I. are applying for funding to participate in a Mediterranean-based field work project situated within the wider Hellenic world,

II. have been accepted onto a University of Sydney field project,

III. have not participated in an archaeological project in the Mediterranean in previous years,

IV. can demonstrate financial hardship

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Director, Australian Archaeological Institute of Athens on the recommendation of a committee comprised of:

I. the Chair of Archaeology, and

II. at least two academics in Archaeology including representatives of Classical Archaeology and Near Eastern Archaeology. 

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $2,500.

b. The scholarship value will be paid as a lump sum payment on receipt of the Scholarship Acceptance Form.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Chair of Archaeology and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Other Conditions

a. The Scholarship holder must become a member of the AAIA and write a report on the fieldwork for the AAIA Bulletin within six months of returning from travel.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. commences part-time study without prior approval, 

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance, 

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application, 

V. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, valued at $8,000 per annum or more for the same purpose as this Scholarship, or

VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave,

VII. has not completed condition 5a within six months of returning from travel.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
