Lignite-based products suffer from the fact that lignite is a soft-form of carbon, which will readily crumble to a fine dust which can spontaneously combust, making lignite-based products difficult to process, handle or transport under a normal air environment. One method to improve handling properties of lignite and lignite-based products is to granulate the material. Project is funded by a grant from Brown Coal Innovation Australia and several company partners will undertake a detailed study of the granulation and drying behaviour of lignite and lignite-derived granules, suitable for a wide range of applications. Project will involve a lab scale and pilot scale granulator studies, including running a pilot scale drum regulator and super-heated-steam dryer at Monash. Some travel to the company partner site in western Victoria to conduct experiments may be required.

This scholarship is offered once only to one person. Open for applications from April 16, 2011 until June 30, 2011.

The value of this scholarship is AUD23000 (per annum). This award is to be used for research and living expenses. This scholarship is paid fortnightly for the period of 3 years.

This scholarship is for one of the following fields of research: Chemical engineering. It is required that your study starts no earlier than July 1, 2011.

This scholarship is for study in Australia for those who have achieved Honours 1 or equivalent. Only citizens of Australia or New Zealand or AUS permanent residentpermanent resident over 1 year can apply.
