What you'll receive
You'll receive an annual stipend paid fortnightly, indexed annually to assist with your general living costs. In 2024, the annual stipend rate is $32,192 (AUD) at the full-time rate for up to 3.5 years.
- Domestic students will receive an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fees Offset.
- International students will receive a Tuition Fee Sponsorship.
You will work in a state-of-the-art research environment with world-class facilities and have the opportunity to contribute to exploring a new class of 2D materials with potential applications across various industries.
Eligibility
You will need to:
- meet QUT’s admission criteria for our Doctor of Philosophy degree , which includes meeting QUT’s English language requirements at the time of application
- commit to full-time, internal study
- be able to commence in the degree by 1 September 2024.
Ideally, you will:
- hold a Master's or honours degree in a relevant field (materials science, chemistry, physics, or related disciplines)
- have a solid background in experimental material science, ideally in 2D nanomaterials
- be able to demonstrate a passion for pushing the boundaries of knowledge and exploring new frontiers.
Candidates who have published research papers in peer-review journals as first authors are preferred.

About the scholarship
Project Overview
The field of two-dimensional (2D) materials is constantly expanding following the discovery of new nanostructures having unique properties. One such class of 2D materials is 'Janus' Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs). We are currently seeking a passionate and forward-thinking PhD candidate to contribute to a project focused on synthesis, characterisation and uncovering the novel properties of this remarkable class of 2D materials. 2 PhD scholarships are available as part of the ARC Discovery project.
Research Focus
Synthesis and characterization of Janus TMD materials and heterostructures, unravelling their unique physicochemical properties. This project aims to push the boundaries of knowledge, opening doors to unprecedented applications in nanoelectromechanical systems, optoelectronics, and catalysis.
