Each year, The Australian Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) make a number of International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) available to eligible candidates. These scholarships allow students of exceptional research promise to undertake full-time postgraduate study in Australian universities.

The UTS Research Strengths are at the forefront of developing innovative solutions to real world problems as well as developing international research linkages.

Value and duration

The IPRS covers the annual tuition fees in a Doctoral or Masters Degree by research, as well as covering the cost of a standard Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the awardee and their dependants. The duration of a full-time scholarship is 3 years for a PhD candidate and 2 years for a Masters candidate.

The IPRS is extremely competitive and only a few are awarded per year.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible to apply for the IPRS, you must be an overseas student who is eligible to undertake a higher degree by research candidature within UTS's areas of research strengths. Applicants awarded the IPRS must commence their studies in the year of award.

Successful applicants must be able to commence in full time enrolment for the first time in the year for which the IPRS is awarded, unless they:

  • commenced their HDR a year before, and due to the timing of their application and subsequent enrolment were not able to apply for the IPRS for that year, or
  • previous commenced an HDR and terminated that enrolment within six months of commencement

Applicants will not be considered for this scholarship if they:

  • already hold a research qualification regarded by UTS as equivalent to the commencing HDR course.
  • have held an Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the IPRS
  • are receiving a scholarship for which course tuition fee is a component under any scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution
