Annual - Charlie Perkins Scholarships
Description: The Charlie Perkins Trust, inspired by, and in memory of Charlie Perkins is establishing a scholarship scheme which will give talented Indigenous Australians the opportunity to study at the University of Oxford or Cambridge.
Charlie Perkins always strived to do things considered unattainable for Aboriginal people. In the early 1960s he was wondering if he could go to university at a time when no Indigenous Australian had studied at a university anywhere. Almost 50 years on, as far as we are aware, no Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student has studied for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at Oxford, in spite of the fact that many leaders from around the developed and developing world launch their careers there.
The reality is that few Indigenous students set their sights on postgraduate study at the world’s finest universities, and this is something the Charlie Perkins Trust plan to change.

Eligibility: Applicants must:
- be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent
- have tertiary qualifications
- be accepted into any degree program offered at the University of Oxford or Cambridge.
Selection of successful applicants will be based on the academic success of the candidates and their potential to contribute as leaders and role models.
To be accepted to the University of Oxford or Cambridge candidates will need a First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree.
Applicants will need to apply directly to the University of Oxford for admission as well as to the Trust.
Only applicants who are accepted to the University of Oxford will be eligible to receive the scholarships.

Value: The Scholarship will cover living expenses, air fares and all tuition fees to support the recipients study at the University of Oxford or Cambridge during the academic year 2012/2013.
The value of each Perkins Scholarship will be between £33,000 and £45,000 per year, depending on the scholarship-holder’s course of study, for up to three years.

Criteria: Applications for the 2012/13 Charlie Perkins
Scholarships will open on Monday 15 August
2011 and will close on Friday 14 October 2011.
Applicants are required to submit their
application to the University of Cambridge
by 1 December 2011 and to the University
of Oxford by 20 January 2012.
A two-track application process will apply – applicants will need to apply directly to University of Oxford for admission and to the Trust in relation to the Charlie Perkins Scholarships.
