About this scholarship

This scholarship is funded by the Digital Systems and Intelligent Sensors group (DSIS). within the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences. DSIS endeavours to utilise technology to assist people with disabilities and/or in rehabilitation. The purpose of this scholarship is to support students with an interest and strong desire to build sensor based assistive technology to improve the quality of living for people with disabilities.

The successful student(s) will join the “Semi Autonomous Wheelchair” development team in introducing autonomous functionality into existing powered wheelchairs and to begin production of Australian designed and manufactured hardware controllers. This research aims to help bridge the gap between research and market and bring affordable and reliable Smart Wheelchairs to people who need them most.

This scholarship provides a living stipend of $40,000 p.a. pro rata indexed, based on full-time studies, for up to a maximum of 3.5 years.

Any HDR student wishing to study in the Embedded Systems/Biomedical or assistive technology field


  • Full-time enrolment
  • Show an active commitment to leadership or community service activities
  • Successful recipients must also not be in receipt of any other scholarship
  • An honours or masters degree in electrical, computer or electronic engineering

Enrolment Requirements

Recipients must complete their milestone 1 within 6 month of enrolment and remain enrolled on a full time basis for the duration of the scholarship
