CTL Student Learning Assistance is a program available to UNM students enrolled in undergraduate classes. Our mission is to enrich the academic climate at UNM and create lifelong learners.

Writing tutors are committed to helping students become more proficient writers by providing support to students enrolled in a variety of courses at UNM. Writing tutors help others in different stages of undergraduate writing, including organizing, revising, drafting, outlining, or brainstorming. Writing tutors provide helpful feedback and guidance on writing, mechanics, grammar, and style, but do not edit or write for others. Writing tutors may occasionally provide writing workshops upon request. As a member of the CTL team, student staff attend biweekly training focused on writing-specific content and tutoring practices, which are designed to make student staff effective facilitators of student learning.

Writing tutors:

  • Facilitate student learning by helping students understand their learning process and modeling metacognitive strategies

  • Provide writing support through one-on-one consultations (in-person, online, and asynchronously via e-mail) in which tutors listen to students’ ideas, read drafts, provide feedback, offer strategies and resources, and discuss writing assignments

  • Provide basic guidance about American English (explain relevant aspects of grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, academic style, and cultural norms, with an awareness of and sensitivity to the wide variety of ways English can be used)

  • Plan and facilitate occasional writing workshops for small groups or classes

  • Serve as a liaison between departments and CTL writing services

  • Actively participate in the CTL training program and professional development opportunities

  • Create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment

  • Perform administrative responsibilities per CTL and UNM guidelines

Applicants will be asked to submit a recommendation from an instructor or faculty member who can speak to their strengths with writing and providing effective feedback. Writing applicants from all majors and disciplines are encouraged to apply. Applicants are asked to submit a writing sample of their choice that they feel best represents their work as a writer.
