Calling all passionate communicators and creative minds!
Prematurity (i.e., preterm birth and its related outcomes) is the leading cause of neonatal and childhood
mortality worldwide, disproportionately affecting women of color in California. Unfortunately, despite years of
traditional medical research, very little progress has been realized. The Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi) at UCSF is
a highly-collaborative, transdisciplinary, Cell-to-Society research program that aims to manage and reduce the
risks of preterm birth. This donor-funded transdisciplinary research program is comprised of a domestic arm
(“PTBi-CA”, funded by Marc and Lynne Benioff, administered through the Dept of Ob/Gyn & RS), and a global
arm (“PTBi-East Africa”, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, administered through the Institute for
Global Health Sciences).
Are you driven to use your voice to champion important causes? Do you thrive in collaboration and believe in the
power of storytelling to spark change?
The California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBI-CA) seeks a vibrant Communications Associate to join our dedicated
team in tackling the critical issue of preterm birth.
In this role, you'll play a pivotal role in:
•Weaving compelling narratives that empower communities and advance health equity.
•Developing and implementing strategic communication initiatives across diverse channels, from social media
and website content to digital storytelling projects and printed materials.
•Collaborating closely with a passionate team of experts to shape PTBI-CA's communication strategy and drive
measurable impact.
Here's what you'll get to experience:
•Craft and manage engaging campaigns that connect with birthing people, advocates, and researchers.

through communication.
•Digital communications pro comfortable navigating social media, content management systems, and basic

Department in the School of Medicine, engaged in clinical, research, and training activities at the Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Mission Bay and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Campuses, as well as satellite locations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, with an annual operating budget of $129 million. The Department has ranked No. 1 in research funding from the National Institutes of Health for the fourth straight year. The mission of the UCSF Ob/Gyn & RS Department is to improve the lives and health of all women through excellence, innovation and leadership in Patient Care, Scientific Discovery, Education, and Advocacy.

The UCSF California Preterm Birth Initiative (PTBi-CA) is a multi-year, transdisciplinary research effort to reduce the burden of prematurity among those at highest risk for preterm birth—women of color and lower income women. Recognizing the role of “place” as a strong determinant of health and wellbeing — including the risk of preterm birth — PTBi-CA takes a place-based approach focusing our work in affected communities in San Francisco, Oakland and Fresno. We bring together academic researchers from different disciplines, healthcare providers, departments of public health, community-based organizations and other stakeholders to work in partnership with affected communities. Most importantly, we partner with women with lived experience during all phases of the research including developing and prioritizing the research agenda, enhancing study designs to ensure cultural appropriateness and maximum impact, and ensuring dissemination of results to a broad audience of stakeholders. PTBi-CA is generously funded by Marc and Lynne Benioff
