Job Description

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) invites applications and nominations for the position of Workers’ Compensation Coordinator.  This is a full-time, non-tenured, administrative position and reports to the Associate Director of Insurance & Workers’ Compensation. The position may be in either Las Vegas or Reno, Nevada. 

The NSHE is comprised of eight institutions: three universities, four community colleges and a research institute.  The public system of higher education in Nevada continues to experience growth with significant challenges and opportunities in serving over 105,000 students and 15,000+ employees.

The purpose of the Workers’ Compensation Coordinator is to provide continuity in claims administration practices across the system. It is to ensure efficient and strategic management of the workers’ compensation program, to ensure injured workers are receiving quality and prompt medical treatment. The incumbent will streamline processes related to disability payments, the return-to-work program, medical separations related to workers’ compensation and the receipt of vocational rehabilitation benefits. They will stay up to date on legislative changes and industry trends as well as participate in associations to develop a strong foundation in workers’ compensation administration best practices.

The incumbent will be responsible for monitoring claims costs, claim frequency, and trends. They will be responsible for creating goals and initiatives to reduce claims severity, claims frequency and fiscal expenditures.

STARTING SALARY:  Schedule C (starting salary range approximately $75,000.00 to $80,000.00; depending on experience). A benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life, and retirement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must have earned a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with five (5) years of professional experience in Workers’ Compensation Claims Administration and Risk Management, or Medical Office Administrative support, or Medical Benefits Administration experience. Alternatively, ten (10) years of progressive experience in Workers’ Compensation Claims Administration and Risk Management or Medical Office Administrative support or Medical Benefits Administration experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree.

Preference will be given to candidates in higher education experience and knowledge of Workday.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following areas of responsibility.

  • Responsible for overall compliance with NRS 616.C, 617.C, NAC 616, NAC 617, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030.

  • Responsible for OSHA Recordkeeping, Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting for all NSHE institutions.

  • Participate in regulatory audits and insurance audits for Workers’ Compensation.

  • File incoming workers’ compensation claims and incidents with Third Party Administrator.

  • Solicit and review accident investigation paperwork and corrective action.

  • Implement system wide return-to-work program for injured workers.

  • Develop and promote continuity in practices for injured workers that are off work. Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory laws (ADA, FMLA).

  • Complete wage calculations, coordinate direct payments and process leave buy backs in Workday.

  • Monitor and review medical management of claims, promote efficient practices and positive claims outcomes for injured workers.

  • Oversee Third Party Administrator management of claims.

  • Maintain frequent communication with high-risk claims. Routine check-in with injured workers. Promote advocacy approach to claims management.

  • Promote reductions in claims costs, claims severity, and claims management through the development of strategic initiatives and goals.

  • Work with Police Officer Departments to ensure compliance with NRS 617/NAC 617 with respect to mandatory Uniformed Police Officer physicals.

  • Review physicals and issue letters of correction for corrective action ordered by medical providers.

  • Develop Cardiac Wellness program that offers continuity to Uniformed Officers across the System.

  • Develop initiatives to help promote the overall health of our Uniformed Officers with the goal of reducing impact and likelihood of Cardiac and Lung claims.

  • Monitor program costs and reserves.

  • Evaluate employee workstations to identify hazards and risks, provide recommended corrective action.

  • Implement employee ergonomic self-evaluation platform.

  • Maintain relationships with State vendors, support employees in obtaining appropriate equipment and furniture.

  • Provide ergonomic training.
