Description

The Wellcome Trust provides support for four-year PhD programs in academic institutions in the United Kingdom. The Wellcome Trust Four-year PhD Programs were introduced in 1994 and are noted for the high-quality postgraduate training they provide.

There are currently 31 programs throughout the United Kingdom with specialized training provided in a range of important biomedical research areas:

  • developmental biology and cell biology
  • genetics, statistics, and epidemiology
  • immunology and infectious disease
  • molecular and cellular biology
  • neuroscience
  • physiological sciences
  • structural biology and bioinformatics

The first year of the program combines taught courses with laboratory rotations to broaden the student’s knowledge of the subject area. At the end of the first year, students will make an informed choice of their three-year PhD research project.

Support for the program is for a period of five years, with an annual intake of typically not more than five students, reflecting the availability of high-quality training opportunities within the program.

Students recruited to successful programs will be provided with:

  • four year’s student’s stipend, as set by the Wellcome Trust
  • university fees at the home student rate
  • college fees (where required)
  • a contribution toward research expenses
  • a contribution toward travel for conferences and meetings
  • a contribution toward transferable skills training
