Job Summary 
The Weekend Research Services Specialist (part-time) provides reference and directional assistance to patrons of Cook Library.  The work includes providing courteous and efficient service and referring complex inquiries to a librarian.  The position works Saturdays and Sundays, including holidays as required.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides reference and directional assistance to library users, in person, by telephone, and via electronic communication methods. Tasks include, but are not limited to: Interprets patron requests and responds with accurate and appropriate information, refers complex inquiries to a librarian, provides excellent customer service and timely response to patron requests, maintains knowledge of information resources available through the Libraries, maintains knowledge and skills related to the use of research resources.
  • Monitors student employees when supervisor is not present, models good work habits for others, and reports concerns to the supervisor.
  • Serves as employee in charge according to assigned schedule. Participates in building opening and closing procedures as needed.  Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualifications  
    Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in library and information science or related field and one year of customer service experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
     
    • Knowledge of customer service principles
    • ability to learn library research techniques and resources; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, as appropriate for the needs of the audience
    • ability to handle emergency situations.

    Preferred Qualifications  
    Master's degree in library or information science from an accredited college or university; experience working in a library.
