Job Summary

As a key member of the College of Education's Communications Office, the Web Developer will lead the day-to-day objectives with impact on the web area, including setting objectives and priorities, and working independently on large, moderately complex projects or assignments.  Relying on prior experiences and the ability to analyze issues, the Web Developer will design, develop, and implement web development projects including websites and web applications.  The Web Developer will consult with client areas to identify needs and develop innovative solutions while providing guidance on best practices and College policies for the website.  Write, test, and debug code.  Modify and maintain existing web applications, along with the main COE WordPress instances (dev, ga, prod), and other WordPress websites belonging to faculty.  Continuously evaluate industry trends for opportunities to utilize new technologies and methodologies and implement these into the solution stack as appropriate.  May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals or support employees.  Looking for front-end developer with user interface development experience.  Experience with WordPress (or other Content Management System) preferred, especially:management and development experience, mastery of the entire WordPress ecosystem + PHP/HTML web technologies, higher level aesthetics and knowledge of WCAG guidelines.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, code, implement, test, debug, and maintain web templates and application systems for College of Education departments, centers, and administrative offices.  Work closely with contect owners throughout the College to maintain all pages' accuracy.  Use project management system, Workzone, to prioritize and complete web projects and tasks.  Provide web development advice to faculty: interpret and document end-user information needs,  Provide training and documentation to new users, including communications office temporary staff and student employees.  Integrate data from various back-end services and databases.  Troubleshoot and resolve issues with existing or developed systems.  Monitor and maintain compliance with all applicable accessibility guidelines (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA conformance) as well as design and usability standards for COE webpages.
  • Utilize tools such as Google Analytics and Siteimprove to monitor and report relevant website metrics.  Continuously monitor web design trends, technological advances, and best web practices in higher education.  Recommend new directions and practices to further advance electronic communication efforts throughout the College.
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Communication, assign work to and manage work completed by entry level professionals or support employees.  Share expertise and knowledge with Office of Communications team to provide meaningful employment experiences.  Assist with hiring of web team members.
  • Other work-related duties as assigned, in support of College goals.

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in a web or application design/development-related field such as computer graphics technology, computer science, information technology or related
  • Demonstrated experience supporting/maintaining/designing/developing a website
  • Experience with some or all of the following technologies:  HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and WordPress
  • Demonstrable experience in designing/developing web-based interfaces
  • Knowledge of latest web design and accessibility standards (WCAG 2.0)
  • Knowledge of and demonstrable experience in developing web-based tools and APIs
  • Ability to utilize tools such as Google Analytics and Siteimprove to monitor and report relevant website metrics
  • Ability to interpret and document end-user information needs
  • Excellent time/priority management, project management, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills along with excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines with attention to detail and follow-through

What is Helpful:
  • Two or more years of experience in developing or maintaining content management systems, including template design and development as well as training content owners
  • Experience with SEO, UX, and Adobe Photoshop
  • Experience with WordPress (or other Content Management System) especially:  management and development experience, mastery of the entire WordPress ecosystem +PHPH/HTML web technologies, higher level aesthetics and knowledge of WCAG guidelines
