Summary:

This position plans, designs, creates/ develops, and maintains content delivered through website design and social media to promote and communicate the vision, mission, goals, programs, services, and achievements of the Facilities Services (FS) Department and for developing/ providing content for other prominent websites and social media outlets in support of such communication to enhance the department's image. The work results of this position have high visibility and will impact how the FS Department is perceived across the University and by external constituents. The position occupant decides on the creative direction and visuals of the departmental website while considering overall departmental goals and strategies integrating multiple databases and development tools to create a cohesive website design to effectively communicate the FS Department business. The position occupant is also responsible for the website's technical aspects such as the website's speed and how much traffic the site can handle as well as fixing any functionality issues, including the removal of “dead links” and keeping the site updated. The position occupant participates in the planning and development of communication strategies on behalf of the FS Department and develops long range strategies to expand audience reach positioning the departmental website and social media presence to be able to take advantage of emerging technologies capabilities and industry communication trends. The position is also responsible for providing Emergency Management communication assistance notifications/ announcements through the departmental website. This position reports to the Communications Manager, Communications & Information Services Unit of the FS Department and may oversee UT Student Assistants.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Create, update, and maintain the content of the FS Department website using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and/ or PHP.
  • Conduct extensive research in the creation of content reviewing industry trends and best practices.
  • Create mock-ups of the website pages and website for the FS Department AVC approval or end user input.
  • Meet with AVC and end users to review proposed website templates or refine designs and run demo tests to preview layouts and website features.
  • Use creative design skills and develop website with appealing appearance and engaging content by using principles of visual design to include the use of typography, color theory, and layout to convey ideas and inform users.
  • Develop website using open source platforms, as well as proprietary software.
  • Develop site maps, navigation, and meta-tags for website.
  • Design for cross-browser compatibility, search engine optimization, and usability.
  • Establish and maintain SEO (search engine optimization) and SEM (search engine marketing) practices.
  • Research and understand emerging technologies and industry trends related to website design and user engagement.
  • Test the website to ensure it functions correctly and correct any functionality issues, including the removal of “dead links”.
  • Determine when website requires redesigning or rebuilding, and develop project plans, budgets and implementation schedules for such.
  • Create online marketing strategies to increase FS Department website visibility and user engagement.
  • Analyze survey data and other metrics to determine effectiveness of content and user engagement.
  • Provide Emergency Management communication notifications/ announcements through the website.
  • Supervise a UT Student Assistant providing work duties, direction, oversight, and performance evaluations.
 



Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and two years of proven relevant experience in a digital design role, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Skills:

  • Demonstrable graphic design skills with a strong portfolio
  • Excellent knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and other visual design tools/software such as QuarkXPress, etc.
  • Fluency with markup and programming languages including HTML, XML5, JavaScript, and CSS3.
  • Knowledge of website framework tools such as Bootstrap or WordPress.
  • Knowledge of Graphic Design Principles/ Fundamentals to include:
    • Typography
    • Composition/Layout
    • Color Theory
  • Knowledge of Content Management Systems (CMS) and search engine optimization principles
  • Experience with computer-aided design tools and software
  • Awareness of User Interface and Experience Design (UI/UX)
