Job Description

Academic Enterprise Communications is seeking a web developer who will work closely with members of the team to design, create, develop, enhance and maintain web content, tools, functionality and format in accordance with established ASU web standards, guidelines and best practice methods.

Essential Duties

  • Develop web forms, templates, database-driven web pages, new web tools and dynamic areas within web pages designed to enhance, sustain and support ideas and vision of the area in compliance with established styles and standards
  • Customize forms and integrate APIs within the system.
  • Provide development and management of custom modules and plugins, CMS theming and site building.
  • Remain abreast of technology directions, initiatives and trends within scope of expertise to provide ideas, guidance and recommendations 
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with team members, clients and stakeholders to understand their requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Maintain technical currency and take advantage of professional development opportunities.
  • Complete projects with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Adhere to software development lifecycle principles and standard methodologies.
  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies, tools, and frameworks to identify opportunities for improving system performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including system designs, architecture diagrams, and user guides.
  • Assume or coordinate other duties or projects as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or closely related field AND 3 years web and database experience which includes creating and updating table structures and views as well as CSS development; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in using analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve complex issues.
  • Evidence of effective communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders, articulate technical concepts to non-technical audiences, and work in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage several projects at once
  • Experience with Drupal or WordPress theme development
  • Experience with Drupal module or WordPress plugin development
  • Familiar with Agile development
  • Knowledge of Google Tag Manager and Analytics. SEO best practices
  • Experience in web application development using modern JavaScript and/or React, and PHP
  • Knowledge of web accessibility best practices for WCAG 2.1 compliance
  • Knowledge of HTML5, CSS3
  • Experience with Git and GitHub, especially working with multiple branches
  • Experience with JIRA or similar ticketing system
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, adapt to changing requirements, and learn new technologies as needed.
  • Experience in work that requires attention to detail to ensure accuracy and completeness in system designs, documentation, and implementation.
  • Evidence of a bachelor's degree or higher in a related field.

Working Environment

Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking. Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer; bending, stooping, reaching and lifting up to 20 pounds. Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties. Regular review of completed tasks.

Reporting to the Vice President of Enrollment Management and Services at ASU, the role of the Provost and Academic Enterprise Communication team is to execute multi-channel communications strategies that help the university achieve its enrollment goals at the undergraduate and graduate levels and support in the retention of current students at the university. The unit is responsible for developing and executing targeted messaging and storytelling to a wide range of audiences including prospective undergraduates, transfer students, graduate students, international students, students with veteran status and family members who support their college-going students.
