Water Data Science Postdoctoral Fellow

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Berkeley, CALIFORNIA
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Climate and Ecosystem Sciences Division (CESD ) at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL ) has a captivating opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Climate and Ecosystem Sciences Division. In this role, you will delve into the impacts of climate disturbances, including droughts, heatwaves, and extreme rainfall, on river flows and water quality in the United States. This exciting opportunity entails working on projects supported by the Department of Energy's Environmental Systems Science program, with a focus on understanding and predicting the resilience of watersheds to disturbances based on various traits and influences.

Join us in this exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on understanding the effects of climate disturbances on our water systems and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.

What You Will Do:

  • Developing and utilizing data-driven models to analyze river flow and water quality responses and resilience to climate disturbances at various scales, from reach to watershed to regional levels.

  • Integrating and analyzing complex datasets, including high-resolution climate and spatial watershed data, in conjunction with measurements of river discharge and water quality.

  • Conducting research and developing approaches for machine learning-based modeling of flows and water quality, identifying patterns in the data using statistical, wavelet, classification, or other data mining methods.

  • Contributing to the development of a Python-based framework for water quality data integration, analysis, and prediction, promoting reproducibility and enabling better predictions of flow and water quality responses to warming and extreme climate events.

What is Required:

  • Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences/Engineering or other related technical disciplines.

  • Prior experience in data analysis, modeling, machine learning, or numerical optimization for watershed hydrology or biogeochemistry.

  • Theoretical understanding and application of data analysis methods, such as statistical techniques, signal processing, pattern recognition, information theory, or data-informed mathematical modeling.

  • Programming experience with Python (preferred) or R.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a proven track record of peer-reviewed publications.

  • A strong commitment to open science, open data, and the implementation of maintainable and reusable software/data products for broader scientific use.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working with datasets used in watershed modeling, including stream networks, climate drivers, stream flows, groundwater, evapotranspiration, and water quality metrics such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen.

  • Prior analyses or modeling of impacts of extreme events, such as floods and droughts.

  • Familiarity with traditional and deep machine learning methods for time series analysis, classification, and prediction.

  • Proficiency in using libraries, frameworks, or workflow tools for data analytics and machine learning, such as NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, Keras, Tensorflow, and Jupyter Notebooks.

For first consideration, please apply with a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
