Overview: 

We are seeking a Waste Services Representative (WSR) who will work with the waste operations & HazMat team providing technical support such as management of universal waste and special projects.  The position will also serve as the ORNL coordinator for sanitary/industrial waste shipments to the ORR landfill.  Additionally, this position will serve in a senior role on the ORNL HazMat Spill Response Team.  This position resides in the Customer Interface group in the Transportation and Waste Management Division (TWMD) in the Environmental, Safety, Health and Quality (ESH&Q) Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Manage universal waste as defined by 40 CFR part 273.9.
  • Support special waste operations projects across ORNL where the WSR will engage with generators to solve complex waste management issues.
  • Serve as the ORNL coordinator for sanitary/industrial waste being disposed in the ORR Landfill.  The WSR will work closely with the TDEC Division of Solid Waste Management and ORR Landfill representatives ensuring that ORNL’s landfill needs are met.
  • Serve as a senior member of ORNL’s HazMat Spill Response Team.  This is an “on-call” position requiring the WSR to report onsite after hours for emergency HazMat spill response needs.
  • Serve as a technical resource for waste operations technicians.
  • Assist generators in the development of technically sound waste characterization documentation (chemical, physical, and biological properties) in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and ORNL waste management procedures.
  • Request sampling and analysis when process knowledge is insufficient to characterize the waste.  Review and interpret analytical results to properly characterize the waste.
  • Assist generators in the identification of acceptable waste packaging in accordance with applicable standards (e.g., Department of Transportation requirements) and the waste acceptance criteria of the waste disposition endpoint.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in engineering or science or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A minimum of five years relevant waste management experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • HazMat Technician as defined by OSHA 1910.120 (q)(6)(iii).
  • Experience operating in RCRA permitted facilities.
  • Advanced DOT Training with experience shipping waste.
  • Experience in RCRA hazardous waste categorization, classification, characterization, and certification, preferably at a DOE facility.
  • ORNL experience, including operational experience about typical ORNL waste streams and associated waste management challenges, is strongly desired.
  • Familiar with the requirements for packaging and shipping hazardous waste to various waste management disposal facilities.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory 
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs

 

Special Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements: Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • Visa Sponsorship: Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • HSPD-12 Badge: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 badge.
