Description:
Position Summary:
The Institute of Healthcare Delivery Design (IHDD) is part of the Population Health Sciences Program (PHSP) which sits within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs (OVCHA) at UIC. IHDD applies human-centered design to healthcare delivery to break down barriers to accessing quality healthcare and to make healthcare systems, services, and experiences that 'fit' people and enhance lives.
The Senior Design Strategist I scopes, plans, and manages projects from problem definition and solutions to concept creation, prototyping, piloting, and, ultimately, implementing changes and innovations. In addition, the Senior Design Strategist I helps manage and improve IHDD's internal operations.
Duties & Responsibilities
Focus Area: The Senior Design Strategist I scopes, plans, and manages projects with standard levels of complexity and ambiguity.
Project Scoping:
With oversight from Principal Design Strategists or Director-Level staff:

  • Helps shepherd business development opportunities from initial conversations, through iterative proposal and grant application writing, through to contracting and staffing projects.
  • Helps create project proposals or grant applications that define how we'll apply design to solve clients' problems.
  • Helps create research and design plans and timelines for proposals and grant applications.
  • Helps determine staffing models for proposals and grant applications.
  • Helps price research and design work for proposals and grant applications.
    Project planning and management:
  • Creates plans for executing design research and strategy projects, from upfront research and stakeholder engagement, development of strategic plans and roadmaps, concept development, prototyping and piloting through implementation.
  • Manages teams of design strategists, contractors, students, and interns to carry out all phases of design research and strategy projects.
  • Keeps teams focused and committed to seeing projects through to completion.
  • Tracks project burn rate and manages staffing resources for a project (or oversees a project manager who is in charge of these tasks).
    Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Develops plans for stakeholder engagement at both a strategic and tactical level, including the identification of the right set of stakeholders to engage to create a more user-centered view of the problem understudy.
  • Manages teams in the creation of stakeholder research activities and the execution of these activities.
  • Leads the analysis and interpretation of the needs and perspectives from diverse stakeholders.
  • Responsible for aligning diverse stakeholder needs and perspectives and integrating them into IHDD's work.
    Design Research:
  • Plans and oversees the execution of design research.
  • Determines methods and tools for organizing design research data.
  • Plans and oversees the analysis of design research.
  • Leads the development of materials to disseminate research results.
    Strategy and Communication:
  • Plans and oversees the synthesis of design research to create strategies for efficiencies and innovation.
  • Plans and oversees the creation of communication materials to convey strategy to project sponsors and stakeholders.
  • Determines the best channel, tone, language level, and format to communicate strategic plans and to support sponsor/stakeholder conversations to get to a shared vision.
  • Presents strategy to project sponsors and stakeholders.
    Concept Development, Prototyping, Piloting, and Implementation:

  • Gets client and key stakeholder buy-in for the execution of concept development and testing, prototyping, and piloting of optimizations and innovations.
  • Plans and leads the development of concepts and concept testing, prototypes, and pilots.
  • Plans and leads measurement development and execution to determine the impact of prototypes and pilots.
  • Plans and leads efforts to shape and develop communication materials to disseminate concept testing, prototyping, and piloting results.
  • Presents concept, prototyping and piloting results to project sponsors and stakeholders.
  • Gets project sponsor/key stakeholder buy-in for the implementation of optimizations and innovations.
  • Plans and oversees implementation activities.
    Staff Recruitment, Evaluation, and Professional Development:
  • Assists with recruitment and hiring of design staff.
  • Provides evaluative feedback on co-workers' performance on project and internal work.
  • Serves as a mentor for more junior IHDD team members, providing feedback and support drawing from the Senior Design Strategist's design expertise and professional experience.
  • Reviews associate design strategists and design strategists' goals and provides opportunities on project work to further their goals.
    IHDD Strategy and Operations:
  • Helps Principals and IHDD leadership establish and maintain practices for defining IHDD strategy and helping IHDD grow.
  • Helps execute special projects that advance IHDD in terms of operations and strategy.
  • Helps document and promulgate operational procedures and 'ways of working' at IHDD.
  • Identifies ways to be more efficient and effective in carrying out IHDD work and helps create/implement new practices/ processes to improve how we work.
  • Models and encourages a culture of care, collaboration, and constant learning at IHDD.
    Qualifications:
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Master's degree in Human Computer Interaction, Social Sciences, or related field plus a minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience (e.g., in service design, design research, design strategy, professional services consulting, etc.)
      OR
    • Bachelor's degree in design, Human Computer Interaction, Social Sciences, or related field plus a minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience (e.g., in service design, design research, design strategy, professional services consulting, etc.)
    • Has some experience managing teams on project-based work.
    • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills.
    • Well-organized and self-motivated.
    • Thrives in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary work environment
    • Strong interpersonal skills that reflect courtesy, diplomacy, and a collaborative approach.
    • Can effectively cope with change and make decisions and act without seeing the total picture.
    • Can handle-and actively works to reduce-risk and uncertainty.
    • Professional work experience translating conceptual thinking into concrete, actionable outputs required.
    • Proficiency with visual design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Sketch, etc.) and Microsoft Office programs required.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience managing clients is preferred.
