The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking up to 2 Visiting Scientific Specialist in the area of Wetland Science to contribute to the research activities of the Survey by conducting research and providing technical expertise in support of research grants, with a particular emphasis on wetlands. These positions will be based in Champaign, Illinois at the Illinois Natural History Survey
Duties & Responsibilities:

• Contribute to on-site determinations, wetland monitoring, and assess potential sites for wetland mitigation by analyzing soils, interpreting hydrology, and assisting with vegetation surveys.
• Collect soil samples using a push-style soil probe with significant force with up to 580 psi of penetration resistance.
• Participate in long-term wetland mitigation projects specifically including evaluation of soils and hydric soil development.
• Support the collection of soil and botanical research data within the wetland science program.
• Contribute to externally funded projects with colleagues at the Survey, PRI, and outside agencies.
• Prepare scientific reports for funding agencies and, if desired, for publication in professional journals.
• Provide GIS technical support towards wetland delineations and other projects as needed.
• Perform other duties as needed to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and the University of Illinois.
• Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
• Participate in the Survey, PRI, and outside scientific organizations.
• Participate in outreach and education events that further the mission of the Survey, PRI, and the University of Illinois, as time permits.

Additional Physical Demands
Will require working in adverse field conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, etc.), and travel (including driving to and from research sites) throughout the state of Illinois in both rural and urban settings. Will require overnight travel for up to one work week at a time. Will require lifting and manipulating field equipment and other items weighing up to 25 pounds over uneven terrain.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in biology, soil science, or a related field. Alternate degree fields (such as remote sensing) will be considered depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Experience conducting wetland delineations involving the identification of hydric soil units, interpreting soil survey reports, and wetland hydrology. Requires demonstrated experience and ability using a push-style probe to collect samples of various soil materials with up to 580psi of penetration resistance. Valid Driver's License.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience conducting wetland delineations according to the Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) method. Familiarity with the USDA NRCS Field Indicators of Hydric Soils in the United States guide and Web Soil Survey. Relevant wetland and soil work experience post-undergraduate schooling. Formal training in ACOE method of wetlands determination and delineation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Some knowledge of current federal and state wetland delineation requirements. Some prior experience in describing soil cores and making hydric soil determinations. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organization, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly employed software (e.g. ArcGIS Pro) and databases (e.g. Microsoft Access).
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time visiting academic professional appointment. The position may become a regular position at a later date depending on funding and a programmatic need. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The minimum starting salary for this position is $48,000 and the start date is negotiable.
