Position Overview

The Department of Earth and Environmental Systems at the University of the South, Sewanee TN, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology beginning July 1, 2024, for the 2024-25 academic year. 

Position Description

The University of the South's 13,000-acre property at the edge of the Cumberland Plateau is used extensively in teaching and research and the Department of Earth and Environmental Systems offers four majors: Geology, Natural Resources, Forestry, Environment and Sustainability, as well as a certificate in Watershed Sciences. 

Attributes of a Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will teach six courses per year (a laboratory component of a class counts as one course), including mineralogy, a field-based introductory geology course, and one or more courses in geochemistry, petrology, planetary science, or other geology electives. 

Applicants should have a: 

  • Ph.D., or be at the ABD stage, in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, or a neighboring discipline. 

  • Additionally, demonstrated success in teaching and the ability to drive a 12-passenger van will both be required.
