VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY (3 positions)

The Department of Biology at the College of Charleston invites applications for three Visiting Assistant Professor positions to begin August 2024: 1) Genetics/Molecular Biology, 2) Ecology, and 3) General Biology. The Genetics/Molecular Biology and Ecology positions may be renewable based on satisfactory performance and pending availability of funds. The General Biology position is a one-year position. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in biology or a related field and a strong commitment to teaching. Primary teaching responsibilities for the Genetics/Molecular Biology position include introductory biology, upper-level genetics laboratory, and/or upper-level molecular biology laboratory. Primary teaching responsibilities for the Ecology position include introductory biology, a sophomore-level biodiversity, ecology, and conservation course, and/or other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Primary teaching responsibilities for the General Biology position include introductory biology and other courses as needed by the Department and that fit with the candidate’s area of expertise. A typical semester load is 12 contact hours, where lecture and laboratories each count as 3 contact hours. We are especially interested in candidates with previous teaching experience. While this is primarily a teaching position, we are also interested in candidates who can bring an ongoing research program to the department that could involve undergraduate or graduate students.

The College of Charleston, located in Charleston, SC, is a public liberal arts and sciences institution of 11,000 students, with MS programs in Marine Biology and Environmental Studies, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and research. Satellite facilities include the 850+ acre Stono Preserve located 18 miles west of Charleston, SC and the Grice Marine Laboratory which is close to the downtown campus. There are numerous nearby natural areas including Francis Marion National Forest, protected areas, barrier islands, and there are ample opportunities to collaborate with researchers at neighboring research institutions including: the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), the Citadel, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, University of South Carolina (USC), Clemson Coastal Research and Education Center, and USDA Vegetable Laboratory.
