What we want

The Veterinary Technician Assistant lends support to the veterinary technicians in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH). Typical duties will include cleaning and stocking of the VMTH, restraint of patients (multiple species) for procedures, cleaning and disinfection of cages, stalls and other equipment, and other duties as assigned. Under the supervision of Veterinary Technician I’s or higher, this position may perform patient care duties including hot and cold packing, feeding, physical exercise, and other duties as needed.

Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.

Required Education:

  • High school diploma, GED or any equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Experience:

  • Two years of related experience in animal care.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic computer skills. General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital preferred. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in Large Animal handling and animal care.

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA)

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Horse handling and Food Animal handling

Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Under the supervision of a Veterinary Technician I or higher, provides patient restraint for medical procedures. Feeds and walks patients per clinician’s orders Observes and reports behavior problems or conditions that develop with animals while under our care to appropriate medical staff verbally and in writing with use of computer and the Veterinary Medical Information System. Performs basic sample analysis. Provides support to other services within the VMTH. Assists with patient restraint for anesthesia induction and recovery. Assists with transporting equine patients to the MRI and CT imaging suites. Assists with proper positioning of equine patients for Surgery, MRI and CT. Provides support for emergencies to VMTH. Perform IV, IM, PO treatments to patient in VMTH after hours as needed. Provides TPR and administer IV fluids to patients in VMTH.

  • General Technical Duties: Administers medication Collects patient medical history Maintains IV catheters. Keeps patients cleaned and groomed. Administers and monitors patients' diet as prescribed. Exercises patients. Assists with collection of patients' blood, urine and tissues. Provides physical restraint for safe handling of animals.

  • General Duties: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Performs recording keeping. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Cleans and disinfects treatment rooms. Cleans floors, walls, sinks, and cabinets. Obtains and stocks supplies used in ICU from storage room and pharmacy.Performs other duties as assigned
