Veterinary Technician
Job Description
Under the oversight of the clinical veterinarians, the Veterinary Technician attends to health maintenance of all species, manages the weekend triaging of all animal cases, maintains the surgery suite and procedure rooms, assists in primate procedures, does weekly health rounds, and provides technique training to investigators and DACT staff.

Essential Duties
- In coordination with and under the direction of the clinical veterinarians, performs rounds, monitors health status, and administers treatments.
- Serves as a contact for investigators that have questions regarding their animals’ health.
- Assists with the rodent health surveillance program.
- Triages all health cases over the weekend and administers treatments as directed by the veterinarians.
- Maintains equipment, stocks, and cleanliness of the Biodesign vivarium surgical suite.
- Maintains veterinary-related equipment and supplies in the other vivaria.
- Assists with surgeries and procedures, including administration/monitoring of anesthesia and provision of surgical support primarily but not limited to primates.
- Trains vivarium staff regarding proper handling of clinical case reporting and management.
- Orders veterinary supplies for the clinical vet team and for investigators who use animals.
- Provides guidance and assigns daily tasks to student workers.
- Prepares and/or maintains various records, reports, and files.
- Assists the rest of the Veterinary Team with the development of goals and objectives to effectively adapt to changing needs.
- Conducts weekly health rounds and maintains the online clinical case log.
- In conjunction with the entire veterinary team, provides after-hours emergency clinical care for animals.
- Assists and conducts training on procedures, aseptic technique, and health monitoring for the ASU campuses.
Minimum Qualifications
3 years of experience as a veterinary technician OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Evidence of being Certified/Licensed as a Veterinary Technician.
- Experience working in a laboratory animal setting, especially at a university.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the biology and husbandry of species commonly used in research.
- Experience in many common procedures used in animals.
- Demonstrated knowledge of primates and primate care.
Working Environment
Work activities are split between an office environment and a climate-controlled animal research setting, with essential precautions in place for safely working with the animals, biohazards, and chemicals. This job may include extended periods of sitting at a desk, using a computer, standing, low-demand walking, bending, and reaching. Lifting, pushing, and pulling of up to 25 lbs. may be required. A dynamic work environment may require the ability to quickly adjust priorities throughout the day. The following post-offer screenings are required: Physical exam, fit testing for an N-95 respirator, MMR and tetanus vaccinations, Negative TB test. Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens. This position has specific vision requirements. Position works with animals or animal tissues
Department Statement
The Department of Animal Care and Technologies is responsible for supporting the use of animals in research to including providing husbandry, ensuring regulatory compliance, providing health care, and supporting investigator needs. The veterinary team consists of an Associate Director, two clinical veterinarians, and four veterinary technicians who all work under the guidance of the Attending Veterinarian.
